WHERE IS WEST CAMEL?
West Camel is a small village in south Somerset, seven miles from the town of Yeovil. It has a population of about 400. The busy A303 trunk road runs along the north of the main village, leaving houses at Steart Hill and the hamlet of Downhead somewhat cut off from the rest of the village. Plans to build a dual carriageway with access bridges were published some years ago, and the Highways Agency has now stated its intention to proceed with the scheme.
West Camel is a pleasant village straddling the River Cam, with an attractive Village Green, an old Tythe Barn and an historic Parish Church. West Camel people are very friendly, and there is a an excellent community spirit. Over the years, villagers have raised a large amount of money for local projects, including a playing field with children's play equipment and a multi-purpose sports court. The most ambitious project was the recently opened Davis Hall, an excellent facility, where most village activities now take place.
You will find much of interest in West Camel. There is a network of footpaths, and the famous Leland Trail passes through the village. We invite you to find out more about the village, its people and activities by exploring this web site. And if you pass this way, please drop in!
